Reducing Variables in Vitals

Updated today

Continuous monitoring devices and spot-check devices are designed for different use cases, so occasional differences in readings are expected. Wearables capture trends over time, while spot-check devices provide a single moment-in-time value. When differences appear larger or persist longer than expected, the steps below help ensure the wearable is positioned correctly and collecting the best possible signal.

Here are some common considerations and solutions:

Placement

Proper placement plays the biggest role in ensuring consistent, high-quality readings. Small shifts in orientation or a loose fit can affect the signal quality, so confirming placement first is always recommended.

  • Place the wearable above the elbow, approximately two inches above the elbow

  • Position it on the outer side of the upper arm, rather than directly over the bicep or tricep

  • Apply it to the non-dominant arm when possible to help minimize movement

  • Ensure the arrow on the wearable points upward toward the shoulder

  • Tighten the band so that it is snug and secure without causing discomfort or restricting circulation

Skin

Skin characteristics can influence how well the sensors detect signals. Selecting an optimal skin area helps support reliable sensor contact.

  • Clean and dry the skin. Skin needs to be free of all lotions, ointments, etc.

  • Avoid placing the wearable over tattoos, open wounds scars, scabs, moles, keloids, sunburn, deep wrinkles, cysts, pitted skin, swelling excessive hair, or areas with heavy pigmentation when possible

  • Ensure the patient is warm enough so that blood flow is optimal

Debris

If readings seem inconsistent, gently cleaning the sensors can help restore signal clarity. Avoid abrasive materials or excess liquid when cleaning.

  1. Remove the wearable from the arm

  2. Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol to gently wipe the sensor area on the back of the device

  3. Allow the device to fully dry before reapplying

Stabilization

The wearable is designed for continuous monitoring rather than instant spot checks. Focusing on trends over time provides the most meaningful insights.

  • After applying or repositioning the wearable, allow several minutes for readings to stabilize

  • Recent movement, physical activity, or cooler skin temperature may temporarily influence values

  • Immediate comparisons with spot-check devices may show differences even when both devices are functioning as intended

Escalations

If differences continue after completing the steps above:

  • Tighten strap and minimize arm movement. Ambient light and motion can prevent the sensors from collecting accurate data.

  • Consider using the opposite arm if clinically appropriate.
